Maximising Comfort : When to Perform a Car AC Tune Up for Singapore’s Hot Weather

The blistering heat is not something people look forward to. There’s no worse scenario than driving to work on a hot, humid day and your air conditioner (AC) doesn’t work. That’s why a car AC tune up is so important, especially in Singapore.

So when’s the best time to perform a car AC tune up? And how do you keep your AC maintained for a longer period?

Here’s everything you need to know:

What Is a Car AC Tune Up?

A car AC tune up is the process of inspecting and servicing your vehicle’s air conditioning system. Components like the AC compressor, condenser and refrigerant can wear down overtime. This can lead to reduced cooling or worse, a total system breakdown.

All in all, a tune up can address any issues before they become major (and expensive) problems.

Signs Your Car Needs an AC Tune Up

  • Weak Airflow : Weak airflow is one of the first indicators for a tune up. Any dip in airflow, regardless how small, should be addressed  immediately. This usually happens due to a clogged cabin air filter or a failing blower motor.

If left unchecked, weak airflow can lead to other problems such as increased moisture buildup and bad odours.

  • Mouldy AC Smell : An AC system becomes mouldy due to moisture buildup inside the HVAC system. This happens when condensation from the AC evaporator doesn’t drain properly, creating the perfect environment for mould to thrive.

It usually comes in the form of fuzzy black patches and a musky smell. A clogged cabin air filter can also trap dust and bacteria, worsening the smell.

  • Strange AC Noises: Weird noises while your AC is on can indicate some issues. This includes problems with the AC compressor, blower motor and condenser. These sounds can be anything from light ratting or clicking to loud squealing or screeching.

Although harmless at first, these noises can escalate into bigger problems down the road.

  • Blowing Warm Air : An AC blowing warm air is contradictory to its purpose. This is a clear indication that you need a car AC tune up as soon as possible.

Low refrigerant levels, a leak in the AC evaporator or a failing compressor clutch are usually the main cause.

  • Inconsistent Cooling : Inconsistent cooling could indicate low refrigerant levels. The AC pressure switch or climate system calibration may also need adjustments. Regardless of the issue, an AC that cools inconsistently should be checked immediately.

  • Leaks : Leaks in the cabin or under the car are clear indications of AC problems. This means that the system is not running optimally and is unable to stay lubricated. These leaks can come from refrigerant lines, evaporator, condenser or even the AC drain hose.

Negligence can do damage to other AC systems, posing more expensive problems.

When to Perform a Car AC Tune Up?

It’s best to service your AC before the hottest months hit or when you notice performance issues. Better yet, you should make it a point to get a car AC inspection at least once a year. Another way to determine the right time is based on the distance you’ve traveled.

Keep track of your mileage and consider getting an inspection every 20,000 to 30,000 km.

How to Maintain Your Car AC

At the end of the day, the best solution is a proactive one. Preventive maintenance can help extend the life of your AC system and prevent unwanted visits to the workshop. Keep your AC in peak condition with these tips:

  • Run Your AC Regularly: If you take public transportation most of the time, don’t forget to turn your AC on for a few minutes weekly. Letting it run for a bit will keep the AC compressor lubricated.

Leaving it idle for too long can damage the compressor and cause leaks.

  • Park in the Shade: Park in the shade when you can. Excessive heat can damage your AC system, causing it to work harder on the road. Parking in the shade reduces strain on the system so you can drive off with cooler cabin temperature.

  • Let Hot Air Out: Remember to let hot air out before turning your AC on. Consider winding your windows down before driving off to let heat escape faster.

Blasting the AC immediately forces your AC system to work harder, putting unnecessary strain on the compressor.

  • Keep Your Car Clean: Dirt and bacteria can easily clog up your AC system. This can lead to a whole range of problems like bad airflow and musty odours. Keep your car clean by vacuuming and dusting regularly.

  •  Change the Air Filter: Check your filter often and clean it if necessary. Replace it if it’s all worn out to maintain good air quality. The air filter can be easily changed and you’ll find most compartments behind the glovebox.
