Car Service In Singapore

What Is Car Service?

Car service refers to the routine maintenance and inspection of a vehicle to keep it running safely, efficiently, and reliably. During a car service, trained mechanics check essential components such as the engine, brakes, tyres, battery, and fluids. Worn parts are replaced, and minor issues are repaired early before they turn into major problems.

In simple terms, a car service is like a regular health check-up for your car. It helps improve fuel efficiency, prevent breakdowns, and extend the lifespan of your vehicle. Regular servicing also ensures your car meets safety standards and maintains its resale value.

Why Do I Need to Service My Car?

Keeping up your car’s services is crucial if you plan on keeping your car for years on the road. Not only will it retain your vehicle’s appearance, but it is also important in making its performance and longevity last longer.

Additionally, regularly servicing your car can also reap the benefit of saving time, money, and even you and other people’s lives by preventing any issues from occurring in the first place.

What to look out for Between Car Checkup

It’s important for you to keep an eye on a few components and areas of your car to ensure that everything is running smoothly. Here’s what you should be looking out for between each service:

Coolant Level

Check the coolant/antifreeze reservoir to prevent your engine from overheating.

It’s important to do this when the engine is cold, or else you risk hurting yourself and possibly losing the coolant cap due to pressure.

Engine Oil Level

Make sure your engine has enough oil and check if the oil isn’t too dark or dirty.

Consult your owner’s manual to see the appropriate procedure for checking your engine oil. Generally, it’s best to do so after running your engine for about 5 minutes, then turning it off and letting it cool for a minute.

Tyre Condition & Pressure

Check your tyres for any uneven wear, cracks, or low tread. Also, check your tyre pressure to see if it’s within the recommended specs.

To find your car’s recommended pressure, look for a specification sticker either on the driver’s door side or the passenger side.

Brakes

Pay close attention to any squeaking sounds, longer braking distances, or a soft brake pedal.

This could mean your brake pads are worn out or that your brake fluid is low.

Warning Lights

Any warning lights should not be neglected. Look out for lights like the Check Engine, ABS, Oil Pressure, and Battery warning.

Consult your owner’s manual to see what each light represents.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQ)

What happens during a car service?

A standard service usually includes engine oil and filter changes, fluid checks (coolant, brake, power steering), tyre inspection, battery tests, and checks for brakes, lights, and suspension components.

What Other Things Should I look out for between services?

Apart from what was previously mentioned, check your wiper blades and lights. These may seem pretty obvious, but cases of negligence have been rising, especially among new drivers and the elderly.

There are also other fluid levels you can check besides the engine oil and coolant. Here are some examples (provided you have access to them)

  • Brake fluid
  • Transmission fluid (if accessible)
  • Windshield washer fluid
  • Power steering fluid (for older cars)

Can I Perform these Services Myself?

Yes, you can! Things like oil and filter changes can be done on your own, provided you’re prepared for the mess and can dispose of the old/dirty oil safely. Other things like tyre changes and coolant refills can also be done by yourself.

However, areas like changing transmission fluid and adjusting wheel alignment are best left to professionals, as doing these without experience can cause damage to your vehicle.

Do I really need to service my car if it seems fine?

Yes. Even if your car is running smoothly, servicing helps detect hidden problems early and prevents any breakdowns, costly repairs, or safety risks

Can I drive my car if the warning/service lights are on?

You can drive for a short while, but it’s best to book a service soon. Driving too long with the warning/service lights on may cause damage, especially if it’s an oil or engine-related warning.
